Soaked

Lately all my twitter updates ( http://twitter.com/#!/SheSureIs ) have had to do with wanting to stab NYC's torrential rain. It's not MAY showers, people. grr. So you would think something of the like would be the natural 3 minute sketch for Illustration Friday's 'Soaked'.

I however grew up with the world's greatest dog. No. Seriously. In the history of the world no quadruped has been greater. Pal was a Christmas puppy the year I turned 8 and for the first couple years of our relationship, when it came to bath time. I was totally whipped. This is a quick homage to the buddy I miss more often than I miss most old friends.

Happy Friday, yo!

Straight from the Book

Last night I had a dream about watching my Netflix....
Apparently my life just teams with danger and romance. My subconscious has to focus on those little things I wish I had time for. When I hit my sketchbook, I very rarely have a solid idea of what I want to draw. When I moved to NYC from Hawaii, I immediately stopped dreaming. Weird, right? I grew up with the sound of constant crashing waves on white sand as ambient noise. Switching that for the ambiance of Brooklyn didn't seem to agree with my nighttime fantasies.
It didn't really matter because that first year at Pratt I probably got about 20 hours of sleep a week. That year I started to realize that my sketchbook is a direct line to my subconscious. For instance... 3 months before June I automatically start drawing boobies and bikinis. It's like clock work.

Apparently all I'm thinking about these days is snow and snow clothes and ....SPRING.
Always, Spring.
P.S. Dreaming picked up two years ago when I got a smart phone and installed lightning bug. You want it. You want it bad.

Resolve 2009

This is my ode to the marshmallows I had instead of for dinner. This illustration happened before a divine dessert of two additional marshmallows (i feel as long as I'm resolving and confessing I might as well be completely honest, for posterity's sake).
Happy Friday!

Lemon Meringue and Pammy Kay

A sweet Illustration and a sugary treat of yumminess.
This illustration made it's way to a very special someone,
along with a nice box of lemon meringue cookies. Happy Birthday!

Pammy Kay and Fire Island

Oh how do I love camping? Let me count the ways...

I trust that all you lovely blog stalkers had perfect long weekends. To celebrate labor I took off with a few friends and made a pilgrimage to an island of fire, specifically, Fire Island.
I was hoping to get more sketching done. Unfortunately I did not. I was too busy fighting off bugs and small children. Despite the aforementioned little issues, I had a great time. I read my book and lazed the day away, I played in the water and slept on the sand and I did a LOT of laughing. Everything about Fire Island took my breath away. I cannot believe how close it is and yet how far away it seems. Growing up in Hawaii has a lot of advantages but one of the disadvantages is that whenever I'm away from a large body of water for too very long I start to freak the hell out. Let's just say I needed to get away a bit.

I think I may need to find new friends by this time year.... I'm pretty sure Shilo and Sara "aren't never going to sleep on no @#!$% ground on no @#$!!(#**! island again." Poor dears didn't stand a chance. There's one time a year where I'm happy that my blood is so nutrition deficient and that's bug season at camp :)
The terrain was inspiring, the whole island has a boardwalk that stretches across it in a nice ambling sort of way. The sky seemed so big and the stars made the whole trip worth it just by themselves.
August 18th was my NY anniversary. It's been eight years since I trudged three thousand miles to start school at Pratt with nothing but a large duffel bag and a wild set of bangs. I never thought I'd fall so in love with the Atlantic, but have to say that I truly feel at home on its shore. I feel so lucky to be living this beautiful life surrounded by people I love while I nurse a thriving career in a city that still thrills me. It's enough to make a girl blush.

Time for Pie!

I've always dreamed of being a domestic queen. As of today I am not yet Queen of all things Domestic. Sadly, as I creep further into my twenties, it's becoming clear that perhaps I never will be. Gasp!

In my teens I was always floored by my mom's ability to bake up a storm without ever taking out a measuring cup. I thought, and she assured me, that once I left the nest and had my own home and my own kitchen these things would just come to me. Looking at a bowl full of flour and knowing that it was filled with a cup and three-quarters of unsifted would be as inherent as my abundant beauty marks, flippy earlobes and embarassingly flat feet. . . . As the years slip by it's becoming clear that someone missed the boat when they passed out the "complete knowledge of measurements" gene. I've been living it up on my own for eight years now and my domestic goddess abilities still haven't kicked in! Pammy Kay is as me as the image in the mirror. I figured if I don't know how many apples it takes to bake a pie, Pammy wouldn't know either. It just wouldn't be fair!

I hope you enjoy this little sketch. I'm off to pack, queen of the kitchen, never. . . queen of travel, handmade sketchbooks and white sand beaches, always :)

Pammy Kay Saves A Penny A Day

Here's a illo from a new Pammy Kay book I've been plugging away at.
I have this little Pammy emblazoned on my checks. I love the freak out I sometimes get from the people I hand a paycheck off to when they realize that the copyright is in my name. I thought this little lady was perfect for this week's illustration friday prompt.
